"The Brain Behind the Blaze: A Q&A with 'The Wicked Nerd' Creator"

This is going to be the best of my posts. As I wanna tell you this, I am an active reader of Webtoons. So I want to interview the marvelous creator who gave us such a GOAT. Seriously, I am down when the chatter is about a character that's a nerd, mysterious, and — in confidence — wicked.

One day, I was scrolling and came across a reel of Han Luu (the male lead). It contained the episode where he was shirtless, with his hot tattoo πŸ‘‰πŸ‘ˆ — and yeah, I opened the Webtoon immediately and got swept up in a world of alluring art and a perfect storyline.

With a curious mind, I decided to interview the creator — my first interview ever. I never expected her to respond, let alone so early. But I wrote a complete proposal, sent it off, and... hell yes. She replied. 😭😭😭😭.

I was in the middle of making a smoothie for my irritating sibling. Paused it right there. Read her reply. And I was seriously over the moon. She agreed. And she is so kind and sweet. 🀧🀧🀧🀧

So I prepared my questions carefully — and by this, I mean I wrote down everything I've ever wondered about 'The Wicked Nerd' since episode one. The list was... long. Monster-long. But I know our creator is busy and kind and sweet, so with a heavy heart (and some dramatic sighing), I cut it down to the questions I absolutely could not live without asking. Hehe.

The Wicked Nerd

So without further yapping, let's dive deep into The Wicked Nerd.

Creator Details

Webtoon Details

  • Weekly Update: Every Tuesday
  • Genre: Romance, University Life, Drama, Obsessive male lead.
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Main character: Han Luu, Vivi Ha
  • Read it on: Webtoon

Storyline:

The story begins when Vivi Ha — a second-year student eager to save her grades — decides to study with the nerdy, mysterious, top-ranked guy in her class. Classic setup, right? Wrong.

The more she stays with him, the more he reveals the side of himself that's more than being a nerdy & quiet guy. And what's more to it? The secrets she uncovers? They are not about Han Luu.

They're about her.

Yes, HER. Vivi herself.

*I won't spoil more (you're welcome), but let's just say this Webtoon is part mystery, part romance, and 100% addictive. The male lead, Han Luu, is a nerd with layers — and a tattoo that made me pause mid-scroll. The art is gorgeous. The story will mess with your head in the best way.*

Go read it. Then come back and thank me.

Characters Detail

1. Vivi Ha

A university student with a friendly and outgoing personality, probably trying to survive her school life. Grades Issues. She is Majoring in International Business. A girl who loves the colour pink. ( Probably, cute ). The story is ongoing, but it points to the fact that she met the male lead in her past; the details are still not on the road.

2. Han Luu

Han Luu, the top student, was initially a quiet personality and was of no importance in his class. Glasses On. Yet the story reveals a secret side to him that points him toward mafia style. In the same class as Vivi Ha. He becomes Vivi's friend because of a project and tutoring he gives her, but there is a deeper and darker side to it that's still hidden. (I and my obsession with nerdy guys always win. )

Other Characters

1. Anie Pham

The ultimate supportive best friend of Vivi Ha. She loves makeup and is a second-year student in Theater & Film Acting. She has a boyfriend who always carries her stuff, and they act cute together (clichΓ©, but adorable). Honestly, she's the kind of friend everyone wishes they had.

2. Kane Duong

Kane is a side character in the story. He is in the same class as Vivi Ha and Han Luu, and came back after a leave. Apparently, Vivi approaches him for a group project. The class spread scary rumors about him related to mafia stuff.
Although she was scared, his reaction was the complete opposite of scary.

He is kind of funny while they work together, and that gives the story a lively vibe.

3. Enzo Dinh

He appeared in Chapter 7.2. While he was filming Anie, Vivi got there somehow, and that's how he tried to get into the picture. He is a playboy, immoral, and narcissistic — the kind of guy who thinks he can get every single girl. He also tried to approach Vivi through Anie and her social media. Honestly, I don't like him. Stay away from Vivi. But I am happy this is not going to be a love triangle.

(Fortunately, he gave me many reasons not to fall for the second lead this time, but still... he is handsome.)

BTS SCENES

Let's carry on with the questions and their heart-warming answers:

Before we jump into the interview, here are some BTS scenes the creator shares to show us that's how she works for all of us. πŸ₯Ή Probably pouring her love ( and a lot of coffee ).

About Webtoon

Q1: Why did you name it The Wicked Nerd? Is it directed at hidden vibes, his personality, or something deeper?

For the title, I wanted something direct and memorable to make a strong first impression. Funnily enough, the name "The Wicked Nerd" was actually one of the suggestions provided by an AI!

Going deeper, I chose this title because it perfectly captures the contrast that I explore throughout the story. "Nerd" represents Han Luu, the male lead—someone who appears to be a quiet, shy, and harmless bookworm. "Wicked" hints at his darker side, a completely different facet of his personality that will be slowly unveiled as the story progresses.

Q2: What's the biggest mystery or secret you're most excited for readers to slowly uncover & or any character that is going to get the huge attention of the readers?

The biggest mystery lies in Han Luu’s true identity and the shared past between the two main characters. In episode 6.3, I dropped a hint that Han and Vivi had met before. It’s a history filled with deep emotions that I can't wait for readers to discover.

About Characters & Story-

Q3: The protagonist is mostly referred to as the hot nerd with dark tattoos or "mob vibes." What inspires you to combine these stunning character prototypes?

I’ve always been drawn to contrast. I wanted a character with striking traits that would stick in the readers' minds. I remember scrolling through social media and seeing guys who wore glasses but had very athletic physiques—that mix of "geeky" and "alluring" really inspired Han Luu's design.

As for the tattoos, I’ve always been impressed by the "bad boy" look with arm sleeves, so I decided to go for it. That’s how we got a nerd with a full sleeve of tattoos! At first, I was hesitant because I worried some readers might find tattoos off-putting, but ironically, it’s exactly what helped the series go viral. I’m currently being mindful of how often I show them to avoid over-saturation, but they remain a core part of his charm.

Q4: Referred to as romance clearly, but hints of mafia vibes. How do you regulate the sweet, mysterious moments of school life with these severe traits?

Honestly, I feel more comfortable creating Drama. However, as a new creator, I wanted to start with a genre that is more accessible, which is Romance. The Wicked Nerd is primarily Romance with Drama as a sub-genre.

I’ve contemplated switching entirely to Drama, but the heart of the story is still very much about the relationship between the characters. I might eventually lean into Dark Romance, but it’s still a bit early to say for sure. I try to balance the sweetness of school life with those darker, controversial moments to keep the tension alive.

Q5:  Will we expect this to dive deeper into the characters' backgrounds? Or are there any plans to make it an original webtoon?

Absolutely. As mentioned, their past is the backbone of the plot, so there will definitely be flashbacks coming up.

Regarding becoming a Webtoon Original, it is a huge dream of mine. However, I’m not sure if my work meets the high standards of the platform just yet. More importantly, I'm still refining the main plot, and I want to make sure I’m capable of handling the rigorous deadlines of an official series. But if the opportunity ever arises, I would love to take on the challenge!

About Your Art Style

Q6: How would you describe your art style? Are there any artists or shows that influenced it?

It’s hard to put a specific label on my style, but I think it’s heavily influenced by Korean Manhwa. I’ve read so many series that I naturally absorbed their aesthetics. My style is a result of learning from various sources, observing real life, and constant practice rather than being influenced by one specific artist or show.

Q7: What hardware and software (like Clip Studio Paint) do you use to achieve that clean, alluring look?

My workspace is quite simple. I just use a Dell laptop and an XP-Pen Artist 10 (2nd Gen). The screen is a bit small, so I’m planning to upgrade to a larger model soon. For software, I use Clip Studio Paint for everything related to drawing. For backgrounds, I use SketchUp and occasionally Blender.

Q8: You've received praise for funny facial features and alluring art. How do you address the precise shifts in expression, mainly for the stoic and awkward nerd at the beginning?

Humor is the best way to break the tension! For those funny moments, I switch to a very simplified, chibi-like style. I often use myself as a reference or look at memes to capture that perfect awkward look. I always tell myself that characters don't need to look beautiful in every panel; sometimes, being comically ugly leaves a much stronger impression on the reader.

About You (The Creative Growth)

Q10: How did you first get into drawing and storytelling?

It started very naturally. I’ve been drawing since I was a child because I loved telling stories through art. It was just casual doodling until the COVID-19 lockdown. With so much free time, I decided to take Webtoon seriously.

To be honest, I struggled a lot at first and even gave up for a while. But in 2025, the inspiration came back stronger than ever. I realized that completing at least one full series was a milestone I had to achieve in my life. The Wicked Nerd was born out of that determination to keep going.

Q11: What’s been the hardest part of creating The Wicked Nerd?

Managing every single stage of production by myself is definitely the hardest part. It requires working many hours every day. Initially, the chapters were short, but as the audience grew, I felt the responsibility to produce longer chapters with higher-quality content.

The story is also a challenge. Since I launched the series quite hurriedly, I’m still constantly refining the plot. I often have multiple scenarios in my head and have to carefully choose the one that will resonate best with the readers. I don't want the story to feel superficial.

Q12: Where do you see yourself and your art in 5 years?

I hope to become truly excellent in both my art and my storytelling. I want to still be making webtoons because I genuinely love this job. In five years, I hope to have finished this series and perhaps started a new one—maybe an Action or a Romantic Thriller. I hope my work reaches even more people in different countries by then.

Q13: How do reader feedback and their attention toward Han Luu or Vivi Ha influence you and your work?

Positive feedback makes me incredibly happy and motivates me to work harder. Negative feedback used to make me sad, but now it just fuels my determination to fix my flaws and improve the story.

For Readers & Final Message

Q14: Anything else you'd like to share? Upcoming plans? A message to your fans?

I’m planning to pick up the pace of the story soon, as there is so much left to explore! I’m also excited to share that I’ll be joining the Webtoon Canvas Translation Program, which means The Wicked Nerd will be translated into Chinese, Indonesian, Spanish, Thai, French, and German.

To my fans: I never imagined I’d be here, drawing a webtoon that so many people love. Thank you for sticking with me, even though I’m still learning. Please trust me—I am always giving my absolute best to bring you the best reading experience possible. Thank you so much!

Literally, I don't know where to start, but its feel so warm and literally makes you smile genuinely. It's a mix of bitter-sweet conversation for someone like me who faced something similar, the struggle. And honestly, we trust you, that's why the story will be the best, alluring, and something I can't explain in words. This is the most anticipated post of mine to share. I hope you guys will like it. And remember, I am not stopping here, either. I have a long plan for this path.
