Top 5 Underrated Anime You Must Not Miss

ANIMEMANHUWA Chronicles: Your Ultimate Anime & Manhwa Hub

Introduction

We always think of the famous ones, such as Naruto, One Piece, or Attack on Titan, while going through the conversations that the anime community usually presents. And for a very good reason, as those series are just great. Yet for every big title, there are thousands of others who deserve the same level of attention but somehow miss out. There are many hidden treasures here in the anime that is really well-creativated stories, with magnificent artwork and characters.

Alright, now let us all jump right into the cut from the top list 5 that I regard the most as underrated.

Let's just say I give you the new favorite list.

1. Natsume’s Book of Friends

Natsume’s Book of Friends | Natsume’s Book | Natsume | Book of Friends | Natsume’s Book of Friends Anime

Synopsis: Supernatural anime series, Takashi Natsume is the central character who inherited his grandmother's ability to see spirits, now goes on a journey and frees spirits recorded in Book of Friends. In that process, he begins establishing new bonds.

Why It's Underestimated: It's underrated because the show's beautiful and heartwarming story does not attract too much attention due to lacking the common elements seen in most mainstream anime-action type movies.

Key Themes and Appeal: The themes revolve around empathy, loneliness, and connection. Great for a slow-moving, emotional movie.

Recommended For: This series is sure to please the fans of supernatural and slice-of-life genres. If you have enjoyed Mushishi or Your Lie in April, then this would be the next favorite anime for you!

2. Mushi-shi

Mushi-shi | Mushi-shi Anime | Mushi-shi | Mushi

Synopsis: This is set in a world where mysterious, ghostly creatures are called mushi. A traveling "mushi master" helps people afflicted with these strange creatures.

Why It's Underestimated: Mushi-shi is an artistic masterpiece, but it is something that episodically does not work well because its calm storytelling and pace might not appeal too much to those action-hungry fans.

Key Themes and Appeal: Philosopherically and existentially speaking, the anime offers a meditative experience. The animation is beautiful with tranquil visuals and hauntingly beautiful landscapes.

Recommended For: This would serve as a great experience for any view who enjoys slow-moving television shows, deep ideas or themes, and that includes Mushi-shi particularly if you want some insight and beautiful animation within a show.

3. Kaiba

Kaiba | Kaiba Anime | Kaiba Series | Kaiba

Synopsis: Taking place in a realm in which memories can be encoded and manipulated, this narrative follows an amnesiac protagonist traveling from one planet to another and eventually unlocking the dark realities that connect memory and identity.

Why It's Underestimated: Quirky and minimalistic art design in Kaiba does not look like any traditional anime, but it is more of a taste to acquire. An intellectual and emotional watch, Kaiba is seldom discussed because its approach is highly abstract.

Key Themes and Appeal: Kaiba reaches into memory, love, and what it means to be human. It is an extremely thought-provoking program that makes people ask themselves questions about who they are and what their morals would be in a different world.

Recommended For: Any fan of psychological or sci-fi anime should find much to enjoy in Kaiba. If you enjoyed Serial Experiments Lain or Ergo Proxy, this might make for an interesting addition.

4. Shiki

Shiki | Shiki Anime | Shiki Horror

Synopsis: The bizarre family lives in the small village, and mystifying deaths start happening. The villagers soon become engaged in survival combat against something no one could have ever dreamed of.

Why It's Underestimated: Shiki is a slow-burn horror series with a disturbing twist, but it hasn't received as much attention as other horror anime like Tokyo Ghoul. Its concentration on moral dilemmas and the psychological horror may be a reason it hasn't gotten mainstream.

Key Themes and Appeal: Shiki delves deeper into the darker side of human nature, fear, and morality. It has nothing to do with actual monsters but more about being monstrous in one's choice of actions under extreme pressure.

Recommended For: Of course, for horror enthusiast fans. If you go for shows with a healthy dose of psychology and dare not shy away from bleak themes, then Shiki will catch you.

5. From the New World (Shin Sekai Yori)

From the New World (Shin Sekai Yori) | Shin Sekai Yori | From the New World

Synopsis: This is an anime set in a dystopian future where the human beings possess telekinetic powers. It is told from the perspective of Saki and her friends as they delve deeper into the secrets of their world and the disturbing truths about their civilization.

Why It's Underrated: It has rich storyline and complex world-building but wasn't heavily promoted, which led to its flying under the radar for many fans.

Key Themes and Appeal: With such a convoluted plot and mature themes, From the New World enters into the dark side of humanity, survival, and what's the price of utopia.

Recommended For: Perfect for viewers who enjoy themes of dystopian or science fiction. If you like Attack on Titan and The Promised Neverland, this anime is a must-see!

Conclusion

There are just far too many amazing anime series that exist in the world waiting for you to find them. It's all just too easy to get swept up on the hype of the main titles, and sometimes all the magic happens in lesser-known gems. Each and every one of these series contributes something unique, bringing this fresh perspective into storytelling, art, and character development. Give them a chance, and maybe you could find your new favorite show in this list!
